Santos Books LLC grew out of my recovery from Deep Brain Stimulation surgery for Parkinson's Disease in 2024. Later that year, I announced my retirement from Elizabethtown College. While I continue to teach at the College as an adjunct, my full-time work is Executive Publisher and CEO. In our first full year we have contracted with nearly thirty writers and will finish the year with at least twenty published books. Most of our titles are memoirs or autobiographical/biographical in nature, but not all. We also have a bias toward stories with a social justice and peacemaking bent.
We take an Author-Centered approach to writing and publishing. This means that we say "yes" before "no," believe that writing is formative and developmental, and recognize that the "answers" lie within the author and their story more than anywhere else. We also recognize that writers are often alone and crave the company of fellow writers and human beings. And that where "two or three" are gathered, God only knows what might happen!
Our authors are currently from the U.S. and Canada, but many bring experiences from outside the Western Hemisphere. They include Freeman Miller, Rollin Russell, Therese DesCamp, Jon Rudy, Ruth Martin, Gary Wehrwein, Gray Fitzgerald, Ann Larrabee, Bruce McKay, Ms. L. Green, John Yoder, Kelley Raab, Peter Sensenig, Jewel Showalter, Ike Porter, Andre Yoder, Beth Robey Hyde, Nelson Okanya, Ike Porter, Charles Maxfield, Mark Chapman, Denis Keith, Dorothy Greet, Duncan Newcomer, Guillermo Marquez-Sterling, Kevin Singer, and Charlie Gardner. They are a diverse group theologically and ecclesiologically.
Our authors are currently from the U.S. and Canada, but many bring experiences from outside the Western Hemisphere. We meet each Monday evening (7-8 p.m.) via Zoom for editorial direction, publishing updates, Q&A, and authors sharing their most recent writing with the group. Retention has been very high (90% or more), and most authors publish within a year. Authors pay an editing and promotion fee.
The community of authors has become the secret sauce of Santos Books LLC. While adding this weekly meeting was almost an afterthought on my part, we may well be out of business without this weekly check-in. It is in the community that the magic of writing happens!
